(Clarinda) Solid net play propelled Clarinda to a sweep over Atlantic in a Class 3A Region 7 quarterfinal on Tuesday at Clarinda. Carsen Wellhausen defended the net, with hitting support from Addison and Miley Wagoner, Jersy Knight, and Kylie Meier.
The Cardinals won the first set 25-9 and followed with victories of 25-14 and 25-14. Clarinda rolled to a 4-0 lead in the first set and built a 19-7 lead before polishing off the set 25-9 win.
The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set but failed to string together some runs. Clarinda broke away on a 19-8 run midway through the set to secure a 25-14 advantage.
Clarinda started set three on a 7-0 run, but the Trojans fired back with five straight, closing the gap to 8-6. The home team never trailed after that, outscoring Atlantic 17-8 down the stretch for the set and the match.
Clarinda extends its’ record to (29-8 ) and faces Van Meter on Thursday in a semi-final. The (21-7) Bulldogs held off Red Oak in five sets, 3-2. The Tigers end their season at (20-19). Atlantic bows out with a (7-25) record.
