(Des Moines) The National Weather Service in Des Moines says today will bring extremely high fire danger conditions with winds gusting to 20 to nearly 30 miles per hour and higher in some areas of the state.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for all of western Iowa, with low humidity levels ranging from 15 to 25 percent this afternoon. The most significant fire danger will be in areas of dry vegetation and cropland where harvest has yet to be completed. Any fires that develop will spread rapidly.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly occur. Strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
