(Avoca, IA) — On Saturday morning, AHSTW Superintendent Darin Jones announced that Activities Director Jason Holst will run the football team for the rest of the season.
Holst has been AD at AHSTW since 2019, the same year that GG Harris was hired Head Coach and he has been on Harris’ football staff this year. The Vikings beat Red Oak 42-28 this past Friday to improve to 5-2 on the season — AHSTW needs a win this coming week against Shenandoah to clinch the #2 seed out of Class 1A District 8.
Holst was a player with Avoca-Shelby Tennant — he was part of the 1991 team in football that was state runner up. He started his coaching career in his home district under baseball coach Larry Rhamy. He was a baseball assistant for 8 years but become Head Coach in 2006. He would direct the Vikings to the state baseball tournament his first two years as head coach. He coached the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All Star team in 2013.
As a football assistant, Holst has helped coach three different teams to the UNI-Dome and once was named Class A Assistant of the Year. In addition to coaching football and baseball, Holst has also been a Track and Field Head Coach and Girls Basketball Assistant at AHSTW.
Holst replaces GG Harris as Head Coach who suddenly resigned last Wednesday. Harris will remain as a teacher in the AHSTW district and will also remain the Boys Basketball Head Coach.
