(Guthrie County) The DNR Office in Lewis investigated a report of Jellyfish found in a private pond in Guthrie County.
DNR Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen says the DNR confirmed the report and found Peach Blossom Jellyfish in the water. This species originated from the Yangtze basin in China and is found on every continent except Antarctica. Lorenzen says they max out at about one inch in diameter, so most were nickel-sized.
Lorenzen says the Medusa, which is the life stage in which they look like what most people think of as a Jellyfish, appears sporadically and is unpredictable from year to year, which is why the owner of this pond figured he might have seen them in this same pond years ago, and have reappeared. Do they Sting?
John Lorenzen appears on the DNR Report every Saturday on KSOM between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
