(Maryville, MO) — NW Missouri St. football made a statement last Saturday with a 14-9 upset over #11 Emporia St. Chris Ruhnke would throw the go ahead 29 yard TD pass to Luke Matthews early in the 4th quarter and the defense shut out the Hornets in the second half. Northwest would win despite committing seven turnovers.
The Bearcats had started the season 0-2 but the win over Emporia St. was the third win in a row. Harlan grad Derec Weyer is the starter at right tackle for the Bearcats and says everybody is beginning to believe that they are a winning football team
Last season, Northwest had a strong running attack led by Jay Harris who has since transferred to Oregon and this year Northwest’s offense has been more pass oriented with one of the best aerial attacks in NCAA D2. Weyer says you got to be ready to run and pass block
Weyer originally went to SW Minnesota St. but transferred to Northwest after his freshman year and he says it was the best decision he’s ever made. He feels like the Bearcats can be a good option for good football players in west central Iowa
At Harlan, Weyer played football, baseball, wrestling and track and field and he felt participating in multiple sports helped him to play football at the next level
NW Missouri St. is now 3-2, they visit 1-3 Washburn this Saturday.
