(Red Oak) The Montgomery County Supervisors voted to reinstate the county’s compensation board this morning. The Iowa legislature passed a bill that allows the Board to decide whether to have one. If they choose not to, the Board will act as the Compensation Board.
In Iowa, the County Compensation Board consists of seven county residents. The Board of Supervisors appoints two members, and the elected officials appoint five members. The compensation boards meet annually to make salary recommendations for elected officials in their respective counties.
Montgomery County Supervisor Donna Robinson heard from people who favored keeping the compensation board, even though the supervisors have the final say on salaries.
Supervisor Charla Schmid said she wanted to reinstate the compensation board. Supervisor Mark Peterson added that the newly reinstated recommendations don’t carry the weight they did in the past. The compensation board serves staggered terms and elects a chairman and a secretary.
The supervisors did not act on changing the public comment policy, which means it will remain the same, with audience comments made before the agenda items.
