(Guthrie Center, IA) — Last year, the AC/GC volleyball team was a win away from the state tournament. This year, the Chargers have begun their quest to state with a 9-3 start and included a big win this past weekend, becoming the first team to beat #2 ranked Riverside. The Chargers won their first three matches at the Griswold before they ran out of gas and finished with a 3-2 record. Head Coach Barb South says the win over the Bulldogs was a huge step for her team
One of the biggest areas that South has emphasized this year to take the Chargers to state is blocking. The results are starting to show — AC/GC has a balanced blocking attack with Senior Addison Laughery (7.0 blocks), Junior Savannah Akers (7.0), Sophomore Stella Largent (6.0), Sophomore Nora Langgaard (5.0) and Junior Camden Richter (5.0) all contributing.
The service game has always been a strength for the Chargers — they currently are 4th in the state with 116 aces — Senior Setter Shay Lemke leads with 28
AC/GC is actually taking a week off this week for their Homecoming festivities — the Chargers take the court again next Tuesday hosting East Sac County in a non conference game.
