(Corning, IA) — Wyatt Mendenhall had a strong game at quarterback and the defense gave the Tigers few openings as Southwest Valley blanked Red Oak 13-0 to start the season.
The defense had a balanced tackle chart but it was Senior Devin Greenwalt who made some big plays with 6.5 total stops, 3.5 TFL and 1.5 QB sack. Southwest Valley Head Coach Keegan Longabaugh
Mendenhall, meanwhile, moved the Timberwolves in two drives in the third quarter after a scoreless first half. The Junior QB ran 25 times for 152 yards and 1 score while he was 12-23 passing for 154 yards and another score plus one interception. His main target was Junior Gavin Wetzel with 5 catches for 93 yards and a TD and Longabaugh says there is some familiarity there but the T-Wolves have other weapons as well
This Friday, Southwest Valley opens play in Class A, District #7 visiting South Central Calhoun. The Titans blew out Pocahontas Area 35-12 and will present a tougher challenge
Two 1-0 teams face off in Lake City this Friday.
