(Harlan) The Harlan City Council Tuesday evening approved a permit for street closing for the installation/painting of crosswalk art at four crosswalks downtown.
Katie Sandquist, Board President of the Shelby County Wellness Alliance, said research has shown that public art draws people together.
Sandquist said last year they kicked off “Community Canvas” with a mural at the Harlan Movie Theater. She said the momentum continues to build and they are expanding the connection to a partnership with the Harlan Community School District.
The crosswalk murals will be located at 6th & Court and 7th & Market Streets. It was noted that the plan is to finish the other corners of the square in the spring to create kind of an art walk.
The permits shows the request for closure is from 7 am on a Monday to 7 a.m. the following day to allow for painting and for the paint to cure overnight.
