(Lewis) Starting January 1, there will be a new list of state record fish to attempt to get in addition to the original list.
On Saturday morning, DNR Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen’s DNR Report on KSOM, the state conservation commission, established a set of records of large Iowa fish caught by anglers in June 1962, thus beginning the official list of State Record Fish. Interestingly, the first record submitted was from a seven-pound, four-ounce, 22.5-inch largemouth bass caught at Cold Springs Park southwest of Lewis.
Currently, the state records are based on weight, but some people may not want to hassle with taking fish to a certified scale, so the new system will be a state record based on length. The original system will still be ongoing; this will be an addition.
