(Ames, IA) – Iowa State wrestler, David Carr, received his third Gary Thompson Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year award for his performance during the 2023-24 wrestling season. Carr joins Cael Sanderson to become the second Cyclone to win the award three times.
Carr went 27-2 this year and won the national title for the second time in his career, becoming the 17th Cyclone wrestler to claim multiple national titles. Nate Carr, David’s father, is one of four father-son duos in NCAA Division I history to each win at least two national titles.
The senior wrestler won Amateur Wrestling News’ Hammer Award for winning the most competitive weight class at the NCAA Championships. Carr took down the No. 1, 2 and 5 seeds on the way to his national title, and four of the five opponents Carr faced along the way finished on podium or had previously earned All-American honors in their career.
Carr led Iowa State to the school’s first Big 12 team title since 2009 as well as a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the Cyclones’ top finish since 2010.
Carr finishes his career the first ever five-time All-American in program history, the 12th Cyclone to finish on the podium four times at the NCAA Championships, a 120-5 career record, the fourth highest winning percentage in program history (.960), including never losing a dual match while at Iowa State (67-0).
Carr will be honored at a football game this fall.
