(Omaha) DTN Meteorologist John Baranak says system after system continued to move through the entire U.S. over the past weeks. He says that so far, in 2024, severe weather is well ahead of average.
As of May 27, The Storm Prediction Center reported 1,000 tornadoes, surpassing the 731 on average over the past 15 years.
There have been 3,142 reports of hail, compared to 2,790 over the last 15 years. Wind events have impacted the U.S. During the month of May, 5,899 were reported, compared to an average of 4,160. This places 2024 on target for the second-highest severe weather reports over the last 15 years.
Baranak says 2011 tops the record books with 1,670 tornado reports, 7,087 hail reports, and 9,041 wind reports. All three are well ahead of the 15-year average.
