(Atlantic) At the 2024 Atlantic High School Class Night on May 9, a 2023 Atlantic High School graduate displayed the true meaning of giving back. Jackson McLaren, who started the Jackson McLaren Scholarship fund with his own money, gave away two $750.00 scholarships to a couple of AHS graduates enrolling in a vocational or trade school.
During McLaren’s junior year, this forward-thinking student decided a four-year college may not be for him.
McLaren followed his passion, and in August 2023, he enrolled in a self-paid program at the Midwest Welding Academy in Sioux City. In less than five months, he graduated, started a job search, and landed a position welding pipelines for Northern Natural Gas.
The idea of starting the Jackson McLaren Scholarship came one year ago while driving home from class night.
This year’s recipients are Wyatt Simons and Nolan Waters. Simons is going to John Deere to become a hydraulic technician, and Waters is enrolling in the Iowa Central Community College welding program. Giving back is defined as providing help or financial assistance to others in appreciation of one’s success or good fortune. Jackson McLaren is cultivating the art of giving back by making it easier for others seeking a similar career path.
