(Atlantic) The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office presented Holly Esbeck, an Atlantic Social Studies teacher, with the Carrie Chapman Catt Award.
According to a Social Media Post, The Iowa Secretary of State recognized Atlantic High School for outstanding civic commitment. Mrs. Esbeck helped register at least 70% of eligible students and received a commemorative banner recognizing that achievement.
The Carrie Chapman Catt Award goes to Iowa schools that register at least 90 percent of eligible students to vote. Secretary Paul Pate created this award in 2019 to encourage voter registration in Iowa High Schools.
Studies show that students who report being encouraged to vote or taught how to register in high school are more likely to vote and be more invested in elections.
Esbeck’s goal next year is to register 90% to receive the trophy.
