(Cass Co) Cass County Conservation, in coordination with Southwest Iowa Fisheries – DNR, was awarded a grant of approximately $50,000 at the end of last year to improve fish habitat in the pond at the Cass County Outdoor Educational Classroom near Massena.
John Lorenzen, Fisheries Biologist with the DNR, said the pond is about two to two and a half acres and it struggled with invasive species, it was silted in and had nutrient issues.
Lorenzen said they have deepened the pond back to its original depth, which equates to four to six feet of sediment removed from most areas. He said when they are done with this, they will construct a small watershed pond above it to catch sediment coming into it in the future.
