(Des Moines, IA) — A new bill modifying the way landlords handle requests from tenants with disabilities seeking to keep their therapy animals now awaits Governor Reynolds’ signature. Under this bill, landlords can require tenants to provide documentation of their disability and need for assistance. Tenants are not obligated to disclose the nature of their disability, only to provide sufficient information to support their need for an animal.
In other news, the Iowa Senate is introducing changes to the state’s code regarding ignition interlock devices for operating while intoxicated charges. The bill, passed by a vote of 39-8, addresses concerns about false positive samples and includes waivers for individuals with medical conditions affecting their ability to use the IID. Additionally, the legislation adjusts the threshold for failed random IID tests while operating a vehicle from .025 to .04 blood alcohol concentration. Penalties for multiple violations within a specific timeframe have also been revised. The bill now awaits consideration in the Iowa House.
