(Lewis) Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen says an angler caught a near-state record-breaking Black Crappie in a farm pond near Atlantic. The fish weighed three pounds, nine ounces and measured 17.5 inches long.
Lorenzen says the current state record is from Three Mile Reservoir near Creston. The fish measured 18 inches in length and weighed three pounds, 14 ounces.
This is a reminder to anglers to register for the Walleye Challenge. New this year, participants can choose the free entry option to qualify for non-cash prizes or pay the $25 fee to be eligible for all awards, including cash payouts.
Iowa anglers compete only against other Iowa anglers for biweekly prizes. At the same time, all catches from across the Midwest qualify for the grand prize drawings at the end of the event. Grand prizes for 2024 include a week-long fishing trip to Lac Seul Evergreen Lodge in Canada and equipment from companies like St. Croix Rods.
Secret spots stay secret. Specific catch locations from anglers are not listed on public leaderboards.
