(Lewis) John Lorensen, appearing on the KSOM DNR Report on Saturday, said get out and get your trees pruned by the end of next week if you have not already done so. Lorensen says January and February are the best times to prune in this area while the trees are dormant.
Lorensen says the purpose of pruning may be to raise the branches, create a dormant leader, remove branches that run together, causing stress, and stimulate them for better production.
Lorensen says it is best to cut the branch longer than 10 inches from where you want the final cut. He says this removes the weight off the branch and prevents it from tearing.
Lorensen adds the DNR State Nursery is taking orders on seedlings. The seedlings can be ordered through May 24.
