(Griswold) The first funnel week at the Iowa Legislature has come and gone. One bill under consideration in the Iowa House is House Study Bill 714, titled Teacher Compensation.
District #18 Representative Tom Moore of Griswold says that in Governor Reynold’s AEA proposal, she initially included $98 million in teacher compensation, which would have raised teacher starting salaries to $50,000.
Moore said they took the teacher salary portion out of the AEA Reform proposal, made it a separate bill, and set year one at $47,500, which means teachers getting paid less than that would get a raise to that amount. Moore says the proposed House version would raise the teachers’ salaries to $50,000 in year two.
Representative Moore is also championing a portion of the bill, allocating money to school districts to raise the supplemental support staff to a minimum of $15.00 per hour. That will take $14 million to get there.
Tom Moore says the house bill proposes allocating $10 million to school safety.
