(Atlantic) Luke Wiebers and Lance Arkfeld led Denison-Schleswig to a 57-51 victory over Atlantic on Friday.
The duo both scored 20 points, and Jake Fink added 10. Easton Emery scored 3, while Kole Towne chipped in 2. For Atlantic, Nolan Waters and Colton Rasmussen each scored 20 points. Gavin McLaren scored 9, and Thomas Leonard scored 2.
The Monarchs started strong, scoring five quick points and opening up a 10-2 lead. Arkfeld scored inside, and Wiebers fired from outside to lead the charge. Waters kept the Trojans within range with three baskets behind the three-point line, closing the gap to 15-11. The visitors scored the final three points of the quarter for an 18-11 lead.
Rasmussen was held scoreless in the first quarter but found his rhythm in the second frame with 9 points. Waters chucked in another three-point bucket to lead the Trojans on a 9-0 run, and the game was tied at 20-20 midway through the second stanza. The game had two ties and four lead changes, with Denison-Schleswig holding on to a 28-25 lead at halftime.
Wiebers connected on two three-point shots and two short-range goals to take the Monarchs to a 43-31 advantage and a 45-39 lead after three quarters.
The Monarchs went inside to Lance Arkfeld in the final frame. The 6’8 post player scored eight of his 20 points to take the lead to 55-41 at one point. The Trojans rallied back on an 8-2 run, but the mountain was too high to climb, and the game ended with a score of 57-51 in favor of Denison-Schleswig.
Atlantic Head, Coach Dalton Frank, complimented Denison-Schleswig, Wiebers, and Arkfeld’s effect on the game.
The Monarchs extended their conference to 7-2 and 10-9 overall and play Carroll on Saturday night. The Trojans fall to 3-7 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference Standings and 5-12 overall. Next up for Atlantic is a trip to Harlan on Tuesday.
