(Clarinda) Clarinda rallied from a slow start to defeat Atlantic 49-36 in a girl’s basketball game at Clarinda on Friday.
The Trojans broke loose in the first quarter on a 10-0 run, and it appeared the game might be a runaway. The Trojans attacked the inside game right out of the shoot. Atlantic’s 5’10 post player Patyn Harter fueled the first-quarter run with three field goals and three free throws, and Maddie Richter swished a three-point basket for a 13-5 first-quarter lead.
Clarinda turned the tide in the second quarter and erased a ten-point deficit with a 9-0 run, narrowing the gap to 15-14. Addison Wagoner led the charge with two three-point shots, and Maddie Cole dumped one in from downtown. The Cardinals outscored the Trojans 14-8 and trailed 21-19 at the break.
Clarinda chipped away in the third quarter and gained 30-29 at the end of the frame. The big push came in the final stanza when the Cardinals raced out to a 19-7 run to secure the 49-36 win.
Maddie Cole and Addison Wagoner led the Cardinals with 16 points. Wagoner splashed down four three-point shots, and Cole connected on three from behind the arc. Jerzee Knight locked down the victory in the final frame with five of six shooting from the free throw line. Knight finished with nine points.
Payton Harter led the Trojans with 19 points, and Maddie Richter chipped in 8.
The Trojans travel to Creston on Monday. Clarinda hosts Stanton on Monday.
