CLASS 1A
Grundy Center 42, Columbus Catholic 7
The Spartans were able to overcome the Columbus Catholic Sailors 42-7 in the first game on Friday of the State Semifinals. Grundy Center was led in the game by Colin Gordon as he went 17-20 for 164 yards and two touchdowns while passing a game-high 42-yard pass to Tanner Laube. Speaking of Laube, he led the team in reception yards with 42 followed by Justin Knaack and Tate Jirovsky with 10 receptions and 72 receiving yards combined. Speaking of Knaack, he rushed for 60 yards and ran in for a touchdown. Brody Zinkula led the team in the rushing game with 94 rushing yards and a touchdown while Colin Gordon rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Tate Jirovsky and Colin Gordon both earned an interception in the game. Jirvosky tied for the lead in tackles with Tanner Laube with 4.5. On the opposite side for Columbus Catholic, the Sailors were led by Carter Lockert in the passing game going 8-15 for 85 yards and two interceptions. In the receiving game, Thomas Steele had four receptions for 40 yards while Aiden Hosch had one reception for 32 yards, the longest reception of the morning for the Sailors. In the rushing game, Parker Kjeldsen led with 43 yards rushing while Carter Lockert rushed for 25 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Drew Schultz had 10.5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in the game. Grundy Center will move on to play the winner of MFL MarMac and Underwood.
Leading in the passing game for MFL MarMac was Bentien Blietz as he went 2-5 for 14 yards. He ended up leading the team in rushing yards with 158 rushing yards with a game-long 39-yard rush. Quinn McGeough rushed for 143 yards and all five offensive touchdowns for MFL MarMac. Both Radloff and Christoffseason had an interception in the game for the Bulldogs. Leading for Underwood was Garrett Luett as he went 19-35 for 282 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. Mason Boothby and him connected in the game as Boothby had 183 receiving yards for two touchdowns. Maddox Nelson earned a screen pass for his only reception and a six-yard touchdown. Gus Bashore led in the tackling game with nine tackles. MFL MarMac will go on to play Grundy Center in the State Championship game.
CLASS 5A
Southeast Polk 30, Valley, West Des Moines 27 (OT)
In the first overtime game that we have seen this season at the UNI-Dome, Southeast Polk wins over Valley W.D.M. 30-27. Leading in the game for Southeast Polk was Connor Moberly as he went 13-21 for 192 yards and one touchdown while throwing away just one interception. Carson Robbins had three receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown while Braden Lundren and Sam Zelenovich combined for 85 receiving yards. C.J. Phillip led in the rushing game with 129 rushing yards and three touchdowns as well. Kaeden Kain earned one sack and had seven tackles. Drake DeGoote went 12-18 for 152 yards and one touchdown. The leading receiver was Noah Carcraft for 39 yards while Jayden Brown had 37 yards receiving. Don’t also forget about our other Jayden of Mr. McGregory for 20 receiving yards and a touchdown. Leading rusher was Damon Head for 133 yards and one touchdown. Southeast Polk will take on Ankeny in the State Championship game.
Ankeny 10, Ankeny Centennial 7
In a very defensive game, Ankeny beats Ankeny Centennial 10-7. Leading Ankeny was Luke Anderson in the passing game with 90 yards passing going 9-15 in the game. Evan Irlmeier led in the receiving game with 65 yards receiving. Daniel Larmie led in the rushing game with 77 yards and the lone touchdown of the game. Ryan Harrington went 1-2 for field goals in the game as he hit the longer of the two for 44 yards. Jacob Mohrfeld had an interception for a 61-yard return and Nolan Dalton Kinnick Vos each had an interception. Leading for Ankeny Centennial was Trenton Smith who went 13-26 for 144 yards. Max Snyder led the team with 40 receiving yards followed by Braeden Jackson for 37 receiving yards. Speaking of Jackson, he led the team in rushing yards with 96 yards rushing and had the only touchdown for Ankeny Centennial. Ryan Bendezu went 0-3 for field goals with one blocked away and two missed. Ankeny will move on to take on Southeast Polk in the State Championship game.
