Mary was born and raised in Neosho and became a licensed beautician after graduating high school. Mary Grimsley and Ralph Hatchett, Jr. were married on December 18, 1955. Ralph and Mary had two daughters. Ralph lost his 3 year battle with bone cancer in 1966. Mary obtained an A.A. degree in Early Childhood Education from Crowder College and continued to raise her daughters in Neosho until 1970, when they moved to Kansas City, MO. Mary Hatchett of Kansas City, MO, and Robert J Abild of Atlantic, IA, were married July 8, 1976. They resided in Atlantic where they raised seven of their combined 10 children. Mary held various volunteer roles at the Atlantic Assembly of God Church (now known as Hillside Hope Assembly). Mary & Bob were active in Gideons & the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) for many years. Mary enjoyed assisting in bingo and serving tea & cookies at Heritage House. She was active in the care of her parents, a daughter and a cousin for several years prior to their deaths. Mary worked many different part-time jobs over the years to help support the family. Her main job was being a wife and raising 7 children.
In May, 2019, Mary moved to Arcadia, Iowa, to live with her daughter, due to health complications. In August, 2021, Mary moved to Journey Senior Services, Carroll, because of a need for full time care due to dementia. Mary enjoyed a variety of activities and the wonderful care she received from Journey staff. She enjoyed attending church in Carroll when the weather wasn’t too cold.
