(Avoca) AHSTW and Underwood, two football powerhouses, square off in a Class 1A District game on Friday night. Both teams are 2-1 on the season. Underwood lost their opener to Van Meter and topped Kuemper and St. Albert. AHSTW posted wins over Tri-Center and Riverside and lost a week three non-district battle with Kuemper in overtime, 21-14.
Vikings Head Coach G.G. Harris says last week’s loss to Kuemper was battle-tested for the first time this season.
Coach Harris says it doesn’t get any easier when they host Underwood in a Homecoming game on Friday.
Underwood quarterback Garrett Luett is completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 697 yards, and Maddox Nelson leads the squad in rushing with 384 yards and a 5.5 yards per carry average.
The Vikings also have a potent offense, with 1,060 total yards, 702 rushing, and 358 passing. Quarterback Camden Soukup throws with accuracy, completing 63.2 percent of his passes. Soukop can also motor with the ball, with 339 rushing yards and a 10.3 yards per carry average. Luke Sternberg is another weapon for the Vikings, with 313 rushing yards, averaging over eight yards per carry.
AHSTW is second in Class 1A with 18 touchdowns; Underwood is fifth in 1A with seven passing touchdowns. The two teams are both ranked in the top ten in all-purpose yards. The Vikings are second with 1,507 yards, and Underwood is ninth with 1,274.
