(Red Oak) Eighty of Iowa’s 99 counties have a freedom rock and Montgomery County is among the next on the list.
Mural Painter Ray “Bubba” Sorensen tells KSOM/KS95.7 News the Montgomery County Freedom Rock will be located in Red Oak. He admits it’s a little too early to reveal what the final product might look like.
“There’s always a committee that forms that helps me dig up ideas and we shoot them back and forth. The week or two leading up to that rock we’ll hammer out the last few ideas. Even then I always like to get to paining on it because there might be a story or two that doesn’t make it or I might be able to add one or two more just depending on how it all plays out.”
The idea began about 20 years ago and all 99 counties are booked to get one, it’s just a matter of time before they are all completed.
“When we started our mural paining and photography studio in Greenfield we started spit balling ideas for a tour for mural painting. The Freedom Rock Tour was born out of that. We just thought it would be a neat idea to put a smaller version of the original Freedom Rock in all of Iowa’s 99 counties.”
