Marilyn “Jean” Holst, the daughter of Jack and Lucille (Doolittle) Allman, was born August 5, 1935, on a farm, near Carson, IA. Jean died August 28, 2023, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 88 years, and 23 days.
Jean attended country school and then graduated from Walnut High School with the class of 1952. After graduating she worked for Henningsen Motors in Atlantic. On October 10, 1953, she was united in marriage to Gaylan Holst in Walnut, IA. Three sons were born to this union: Alan, Brian, and Darran. Jean and Gaylan lived in several different places before returning to the family farm west of Griswold. Jean maintained her home on the farm until the time of her death.
Jean was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church and P.E.O. She enjoyed doing crafts, gardening, working with her flowers, and raising different species of Iris’s.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Fred, and Jim.
She is survived by her husband Gaylan Holst of Griswold, IA; her sons: Alan Holst and wife Terri of Council Bluffs, IA, Brian Holst and wife Maria of Omaha, NE, and Darran Holst and wife Dawn of Omaha, NE; her grandchildren: Sarah, Nathan, Logan, Jacob, and Emmalyn Holst, all of Omaha, NE; and many other relatives and friends.
A time of remembrance will be conducted by Rev. Jessica Jacobsen at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. This will be followed by a visitation with Jean’s family until 4:00 PM. Interment will be in the Shelby Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the Griswold United Methodist Church.
