(Audubon, IA) – Audubon fell to CAM 42-12 as the Wheelers were never able to get the offense rolling. Breaking down this competition overall, CAM started off hot in the first quarter.
The Cougars started off scoring with a deep pass from Chase Spieker in the backfield to Jack Follman which brought the Cougars up 6-0 as they were unable to score on the two-point conversion. To add to the first quarter of action, CAM made it all the way down to the one-yard line to hand it off, and Brody Paulsen jumped over the offensive line to bring the Cougars up 12-0. After a two-point conversion from the Cougars, Audubon was down 14-0 to end the first quarter.
CAM continued adding onto the scoreboard as Chase Spieker found Jack Follman again to put the Cougars up 20-0 and added on the two-point conversion to bring CAM up 22-0. Audubon was able to add a touchdown in the game as the Wheelers scored off a missed snap for a CAM punt as Austin Christensen snagged up the missed punt, and went into the endzone for Audubon’s only touchdown of the first half.
After halftime, Audubon started to come back as the Wheelers scored first with the rushing game of Carsol Wessel as he continued to sneak into the middle which ended up being the only offensive touchdown for Audubon in the whole competition. The Cougars seemed to wake up and make big-time plays on both the offensive and defensive end. CAM added on 14 in the third quarter after Audubon began to come back into the game. After an interception by right-end Chase Jahde, the junior ran all the way into the endzone for a touchdown. Following the defensive-lineman touchdown, Chase Spieker wanted one of his own. The quarterback led a sneak right through the middle to break the line and rush in for a 20+ yard touchdown.
The fourth quarter resulted in CAM’s Spieker rushing in for another touchdown in the game. The typical pocket quarterback started using his legs in this game as he broke through the line again to score that touchdown for the Cougars. They were unable to score their two-point conversion and were able to finally beat Audubon 42-12.
Chase Spieker threw for 164 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for 119 yards and rushing in two touchdowns. Jack Follman led in the receiving game as he had two receiving touchdowns and 107 receiving yards. Brayden Chester also had an impressive game with eight tackles. Another player who was more than impressive was Ryan Bower as he had two interceptions in the contest.
Audubon utilized Aaron Olsen in his rushing game as he continued to switch with Carson Wessel. Earning the only Audubon offensive touchdown of the game was Wessel as he rushed into the endzone to help lift Audubon back into the game. Austin Christensen earned an interception and a touchdown for the Wheelers.
Audubon will take on Colo-Nesco in week two as the CAM Cougars will take on Griswold in their next competition.
