(Des Moines) The Iowa State Fair that opens Thursday offers a critical test for Republican presidential candidates not named Donald Trump. Polling shows the former president holding a big lead over all the other candidates for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. A recent New York Times/Siena College poll showed Trump with 44 percent support in Iowa. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was a distant second at 20 percent and all the others at less than ten percent. But Trump’s support in Iowa has declined, suggesting another candidate could come away the winner in next January’s Iowa caucuses, the first nomination competition of the year.
