(Coralville) In continuation of National Police Week, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, former chairman and senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, addressed the Iowa Police Chief’s Association’s 36th Annual Conference in Coralville.
Grassley commended the police chiefs, sheriffs, and leaders for their hard work and sacrifice to keep Iowans safe.
Grassley also highlighted his efforts to curb anti-police rhetoric, the bi-partisan Invest to Protect Act to increase support for rural police departments, and his commitment to partnering with law enforcement to combat the fentanyl crisis, organized retail crime, gang violence, and attacks on police.
The Invest to Protect Act would Invest in officer safety, de-escalation, and domestic violence response training, allowing officers to receive critical activity that will make them even more effective at their jobs; Create grants for small departments to recruit and retain new officers to help keep their existing officers and recruit new ones; Allow departments to provide mental health resources for their officers; and, authorize $50,000,000 of existing funding per year for five years for local police departments.
