(Ames, IA) — A lot of Iowans have started mowing their lawns for the first time this spring. Some may be trying out the “No Mow May” idea, but not everyone’s a fan. Adam Thoms, Iowa State University Turf Grass Specialist, says not mowing for an entire month can lead to other problems in the lawn, like big spots. He recommends cutting the grass at four-to-five inches tall. He says that’s better for the root structure and helps the lawn cope during dry weather.
