(Des Moines) Main Street Iowa hosted last week’s annual Main Street Iowa Development Awards celebration in Des Moines. The program honors the efforts of those who work tirelessly to revitalize Iowa’s downtowns and to make a difference in the state’s Main Street districts.
As reported yesterday, Avoca Mainstreet received a $3 Million benchmark award, and Sabrina Lewis, a design team member, received the Leadership Award.
Audio PlayerAmber Mohr, Avoca Mainstreet Executive Director, says Sabrina’s “party first” method of leadership (i.e., make it sound like a party and they will come!) has created innovative volunteer efforts, including the frequently-updated collaborative art display outside Avoca Public Library and refurbishment of the city’s holiday lamppost décor at “Christmas in July.”
Main Street Iowa also recognized Amber Mohr as a tenured Executive Director.
In 1985, the Iowa Legislature adopted Main Street America’s Four Point Approach® to district revitalization by establishing Main Street Iowa within the agency that is now the IEDA.
