(Harlan) On March 21, the Harlan City Council voted to enter a 28E agreement with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. On Tuesday, the Shelby County Board of Supervisors approved the agreement.
Many smaller cities in Iowa contract with the county sheriff’s department to provide law enforcement, one because it is more cost-effective and may not have the budget capacity to pay for its police department.
Harlan Mayor Jay Christensen stated at the March 21 City Council meeting that the 28E agreement is strictly due to the challenges of hiring and maintaining a Police Unit.
Under the plan, the Sheriff’s Office would expand the force. The current Police Officer would need to apply.
