(Greenfield) The Nodaway Valley boys track team is scheduled to compete in a meet at Bedford on Tuesday.
A couple of seniors lead the way for the Wolverines. “Blake Lund missed going to state in the 400 hurdles last year by less than a second, so we are hoping to get him there. Plus we have Doug Berg who was ranked pretty high, so we are hoping to get him in there as well.”
Coach Chase Green admits most of the team showed up for preseason workouts in good shape. “Our goal then is to get them in better shape. We’ve been running some pretty extensive workouts. Training a lot of endurance, sprinting, trying to get them so they can maybe not move as fast as they can, but move at a quicker pace for a long ways. We are going to eek it down as we go through the season and focus more and more on speed and speed development.”
While Berg and Lund will be a couple of the key leaders, there are several others expected to contribute in a big way. “Boston DeVault is focusing on the 800 this year and I’m hoping to get him into the low 2:00’s if that’s possible. Mason Wilson, I’m hoping to get him under 12.5 in the 100. He keeps working at that and getting his block starts stronger. Trent Warner is our thrower. He was doing pretty good and coming on strong last year. He started this year where he left off last year. In fact, I think he was even better his first couple of throws this year than he was at the end of last year. There is some serious potential there.”
Green feels sophomore Trent Warner will have a chance to score some points at the state meet. Green notes freshmen Keyin Steeve and Ashton Honnold have shown promise. He’s also optimistic about the 4X400 and 4X100 relays.
