Donald Dean Smith passed away on January 26th, 2023 at Salem Lutheran Homes and Rehabilitation Center in Elk Horn, Iowa. Donald is survived by his brothers and sister; Raymond (Jean) Smith of Atlantic, Gordon Smith of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Edward (Jolene) Smith of Atlantic, Helen Gregersen of Atlantic, Doris Webster of Indianola and several nieces and nephews. Donald is also survived by his three children; Lisa Jacobsen of Elk Horn, Mark Smith of Atlantic, Kristi (Brian) Wood of Woodbine, as well as eight grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Donald is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, his parents Edward Carlton and Elva Adell (Reed) Smith, his brother George Smith, brother Carlton Cecil Smith, brother Basil Charles Smith, and sister Karen Smith.
Donald was born on December 31, 1935, in Griswold, Iowa to Edward and Elva Smith. Don was baptized at United Church of Christ in Griswold. He was united in marriage on September 6, 1959 to Ethel Wolf at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, Iowa. Don worked for Walnut Grove Products Company for forty-two years before retiring. Don also farmed and raised hogs in his early married years.
Don enjoyed deer hunting, westerns, professional wrestling, working in the garden, doing yard work, and loved Iowa football. Don also enjoyed all his grandkids and great grandkids.
Don’s children have decided to respect his wishes and not have services for him.
