(Denison) Denison Schleswig’s big third-quarter run led to a 71-60 win over Atlantic in a Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys’ basketball game at Denison on Tuesday.
Despite the loss, the Trojans performed much better this second time after the Monarchs dominated the first meeting 70-46.
Colton Rasmussen, who led all scorers for Atlantic with 26 points, poured in nine points in the first quarter, giving the Trojans the edge of 13-12. Luke Wiebers opened the game with a layup to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead; the Trojans countered with seven straight points and held the advantage the rest of the frame. The 6’3 junior added eight more in the second stanza, supported by Carter Pellett and Jayden Proehl’s two key three-point shots, placing the visitors in front by two at the break, 37-35.
The tide turned in the third quarter. Denison-Schleswig was down 46-40, forced several costly turnovers, and got the ball inside to 6’8 Post Lance Arkfeld. Carsen Seuntjens started the Monarch’s 12-0 run with a three-point basket to close the gap to 46-45, outscored Atlantic 19-11, and carried a 55-48 lead into the final quarter.
The Monarchs increased the deficit to ten points in the fourth quarter. Atlantic battled back within three points, 63-60, but the Monarchs closed out the game on an 8-0 run to secure the 71-60 final.
Lance Arkfeld led the Monarchs with 18 points, and Carson Suentjens added 15. Colton Rasmussen led the Trojans with 26 points, and Carter Pellett finished the night with 15 points.
