(Area) Ice fishing season is winding down.
Warmer than normal temperatures in the month of February are leading to fewer opportunities on the ice. “We are starting to see deteriorating ice. As we see those days in the 50’s and nights not getting below freezing. We’ve lost some ice.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis suggests travelling north. “Places like Spirit Lake, Clear Lake, Black Hawk, and Storm Lake. They are all sitting on a foot or more of ice. There will be plenty of activity there for the next week to ten days or two weeks. It all depends on the weather.”
Deteriorating signs include ice becoming dark, honeycombed, and porous. Hayes says the ice is weaker, older, and is starting to pull away from the shore.
