(Avoca) It’s the Girls Super Regional Wrestling Tournaments taking place throughout the state on Friday. Wrestlers are competing in eight regions at four sites.
AHSTW is in Region 1 along with 21 other programs. The Lady Vikes will be represented by Bella Canada. “Bella is really excited to compete this weekend and earn her way to the girls state tournament. From what I can tell she’s going to have a 12-16 girl bracket. She’ll have to finish in the top four to move on. I believe there’s a pretty quality girl from Humboldt that will be there. Haley Armstrong from SWAT will be there and she’s had Bella’s number this year. Bella won the first one, but Armstrong has won the last two. Bella needs to be at her best on Friday.”
Coach Evan McCarthy says Canada has made strides in multiple areas since placing 4th at state last year. “I think her feet. Her foot speed has gotten a little bit better. We’ve been trying to do a lot more footwork in the room with everybody and I think that’s helped her a lot. I feel like on top she’s continued to get better in understanding how to apply pressure. On bottom she’s done a better job of fighting her way out of there. We’ve always been real proud of Bella. She has a good attitude and works as hard as we ask her to.”
Most of the wrestlers from this area will be at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City in either Region 1 or Region 2. Some area teams head to the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines for Region 3 and Region 4 competition. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to state next Thursday and Friday in Coralville.
