(Greenfield) The Nodaway Valley/O-M wrestlers will be at home on Tuesday for a quadrangular with North Polk, Saydel and Van Meter.
The Wolverines are ramping things up as they head towards the stretch run. Despite being without a couple of wrestlers on Saturday they found a way to finish 4th out of 18 teams at Tri-Center. “Other kids wrestled really well. We didn’t have any champions which maybe was a goal to have one or two of those, but our kids were in some pretty tough weight classes. Our guys that have been leading the way led the way and some of the younger guys stepped up. I think 9 of our 11 guys placed so it was a quality day for us, we were happy.”
Trent Warner’s runner-up finish at heavyweight was top individual finish. Coach Brad Honnold’s group also go two key dual wins last week against Lenox and Martensdale-St. Marys. The Wolverines had beat the Blue Devils in a dual in December, but finished below them in the Pride of Iowa Conference Tournament. “We knew coming right back after Christmas we would have to wrestle really well. Again, we were a little short handed, but the guys stepped up and it was a good, solid dual. We love to have competition like that. They are good, quality team. Their kids come out and battle and our kids come out and battle. We have a good mutual respect for their coaching staff and their kids. It’s fun to go to battle in those situations. Getting the win there and getting a win against Lenox was good.”
Coach Honnold preview’s Tuesday’s home quadrangular. “We want to go out and compete again and see if we can’t get three more dual wins and keep ourselves in position to maybe qualify for the Regional Duals at the end of January.”
Keyin Steeve, Zackery Gebbie, Carmine Shaw, Ashton Honnold, and Trent Warner all have at least 20 wins on the season. The Wolverines will head to the ADM Tournament this weekend where they will see several quality 2A and 3A teams.
