(Atlantic) Dr. Matt Weresh is taking his scrooge candidacy seriously.
The orthopedic surgeon at Cass Health is taking donations at the hospital. “They can just pull up to the hospital to our valet people right at the door. They don’t even need to get out of there car. We are trying to mount as much response as possible either through costumes or cheerful wishes. If people don’t want me to win then go donate to the other contestants. The real winner in the whole contest is the food pantry here in Atlantic.”
Weresh says he’s learned a lot about the food pantry. “Three years ago they gathered about 20,000 worth and delivered it impoverished families in Cass County. They serve mostly Atlantic. About 80% of the people are in Atlantic, but they service the whole county. They do some amazing things. It’s almost all volunteerism that runs it. There are eight or nine people on their board, but they have 30 volunteers. Any money contributed to the food pantry gets delivered as food to people in need. It’s a really solid charity and a great thing we have going here.”
Other scrooge contentants include Jeff Gude at First Whitney Bank, Dave Frederiksen at Hy-Vee, and Joyce Weiser and Lori Blum from Brown’s Shoe Fit.
