(Adair) Multiple Sclerosis is a disease affecting the central nervous system. The immune system attacks the protective layer around nerve fibers and causes inflammation and lesions making it difficult for the brain to send signals to the rest of the body.
Deb Richter is the President and co-founder of ACG MS, an acronym for Adair, Cass, and Guthrie MS. In April, Richter formed this new non-profit organization to support those dealing with this debilitating disease. The membership grew from four or five initial members to 17 today.
Richter says the ACG MS Warriors are hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, October 15, at the Adair Fire Hall starting at 5:00 p.m. with a meal, bags tournament, and a raffle of nearly 100 prizes. The money raised from the event goes toward M.S. research and the statewide organization-MS Moments based in Des Moines. This statewide organization provides financial help to M.S. Sufferers for acupuncture, massages, and gym memberships.
People with M.S. interested in joining ACG MS Warriors can go to the non-profits Facebook page or email at acgmswarriors@yahoo.com.
There are more than 200,000 cases annually in the U.S., and there is no cure. People from 18 to 55 are more commonly affected, and the disease appears to be more common in women.
