(Guthrie Center) The (2-1) ACGC football team heads into week four following back-to-back wins over Woodward-Granger, and Des Moines Christian. ACGC and West Central Valley kick off district play at ACGC High School on Friday night. The Wildcats are (2-1) coming off a 13-12 win over Eagle Grove last week.
ACGC Head Coach Cody Mattheson’s offense ran the ball 67 times for 417 yards in last week’s 32-27 win over Des Moines, Christian.
The Chargers have a wealth of running backs. Seth Reno leads the bevy of backs with 351 yards, Austin Kunkle, 275, and Brock Littler 233. Matthewson says to throw in Ben Marsh with 123 yards, and all four are averaging over five yards per carry.
Matthewson says they are sitting in a good spot, not having to use one back toting the ball 30-to-40 times a game.
ACGC and West Central Valley are both Guthrie County teams 30 miles apart, so there is a lot of familiarity between the two, not only in football but in other sports. The Wildcats, like ACGC, hang their hat on the running game.
Coach Matthewson says the point of emphasis this week is stopping the run. He says last week, Des Moines, Christian, through the ball 48 times in 48 minutes, while the charges carried the ball 67-times in 48 minutes.
ACGC and West Central Valley are grouped in Class 1A District #7 with Interstate 35, Nodaway Valley, Panorama, and Van Meter.
