(Mondamin) West Harrison has caught people’s attention with their 2-0 start and now the Hawkeyes have an ever bigger chance to turn heads when they meet CAM in Week 3.
From a state tournament appearance in basketball to a substate final in baseball to receiving votes in the AP top ten for 8-Player football, West Harrison athletics have been on an upward trajectory. Head coach Andrew Stevenson says, “The boys we have expect to be the best. That’s just kind of their mentality.” Stevenson says, “They want to work as hard as they can to get to that top level. Right now we are hitting on all cylinders so to speak.”
Stevenson admits there’s still work to do. “I think our biggest strength right now is our defense. We have the ability to do what we want to do and play hard and hit hard and flow to the ball really well. Offensively we are doing well. We have a balanced attack, but we are still working through a few things. Early in the year we are still trying to find out what fits us.”
This week they’ll meet a CAM team that’s won 15 consecutive games. “Everything looks the same. I know they lost a lot of talent from their state championship team, but they also reloaded pretty well. They have guys that do everything they did last year. I know some of them are young and learning, but their system works and it works well. The coaching staff has always got them ready to go, so we have to be on it. We have to really limit our mistakes and know our assignments.”
The majority of West Harrison’s starters have been in the lineup for at least two years and some of the seniors have been playing varsity since they were freshmen. We’ll have Friday’s clash of quality 8-Player, District ten foes on 96.5 KSOM with live video streaming HERE
