(Council Bluffs) Defending 4A State Football Champion Lewis Central hosts defending Class 3A State Football Champion Harlan on Thursday. KSOM will broadcast the matchup.
These teams delivered a classic in Week 1 last year when Harlan prevailed 36-29. Lewis Central coach Justin Kammrad was asked what concerns him the most about the Cyclones. “Oh boy. You wish you could say there is one thing, but it’s truly not. They are always going to be well coached. They are going to have us schemed up really well. Ultimately it comes down to they have some really good playmakers. They have some really good talented athletes and football players that know how to make plays. Both offensively and defensively a lot of those guys are big time playmakers that we have to be ready for.”
The Titans are coming off of a 35-20 win over Underwood last week. “Getting that game helps reveal a lot of things good and bad that we as a program and we as players need to fix.” Kammrad says, “It allows us to move some guys around and fix some things. It gives our younger guys a chance to have some game time under their belts. It’s advantageous for us to get those jitters out of the way and set our guys up for success.”
Coach Kammrad on the biggest takeaway from their Week 0 performance. “Offensively we knew we had some guys coming back and we felt pretty confident about that. We do have the potential to still be pretty darn good offensively. On the defensive side we replace six of our front eight guys, so we wanted to see how they would manage their first game.”
A few stars return on offense. UNI commit Braylon Kammrad passed for over 2,500 yards last season with 25 TD’s and only four interceptions. He and running back Johnathan Humpal are three year starters. Humpal had 1,432 rushing yards and 24 TD’s last year. Lucci Fidone is also back after catching 51 passes for 740 yards and 11 scores in 2021.
Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. The game kicks off at 7:00 on 96.5 FM KSOM.
