Phyllis Jean Simonton, 95, of Atlantic, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Heritage House.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. A private family inurnment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel at a later date.
Open visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Roland Funeral Home.
She was born on March 14, 1927, in Braddyville, Iowa, the daughter of Amos and Ruth Eshelman. She was raised in Clarinda, Iowa and graduated from Clarinda High School. Phyllis married her boyfriend Hal on January 6, 1945, just before Hal entered the service.
Phyllis accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1969; she loved serving the Lord. She and Hal were members of the Mission America Placement Services (MAPS) for 14 years and they traveled the U.S., as volunteers, helping to build many Assemblies of God churches.
Phyllis and Hal were in the plumbing, heating, and air conditioning business for many years, and retired together in 1988. Three generations of the family have owned and operated Simonton Plumbing & Heating for 64 years.
She was a member of the First Assembly of God, more recently known as Hillside Hope Church, in Atlantic and also a member of the Red Hat Ladies Society. Phyllis spent many hours in her flower and vegetable gardens and even in quieter moments her hands were busy crocheting. She also enjoyed playing BINGO and card games; Skip-Bo being a favorite. She cherished time cooking and baking for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Hal Simonton; her parents, Amos and Ruth; her son, Kim (Rhonda) Simonton; and her brother, Bob.
