(Des Moines) The Iowa Department of Public Health and Human Services says tests conducted by the State Hygienic Lab revealed a probable case of monkeypox.
The patient from northcentral Iowa was likely infected during international travels and is isolated, according to the press release from the IDPH. HHS staff and local public health officials are conducting contract tracing with local health partners to identify anyone at risk due to direct or close contact with the infected person.
The risk to the public is low, but anyone with a rash that looks like monkeypox should talk to a healthcare provider.
Over 5,700 cases have been reported internationally. In the U.S., 460 cases have been reported across 32-states.
