(Denison) The Iowa State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies will have an increased presence on the roadways over this long holiday weekend.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy, says the three-day holiday weekend increases traffic patterns. “Historically, July 4 holiday is associated with increased alcohol use and alcohol-related crashes,” said McCreedy. “This year, the fourth lands on a Monday, which means a long holiday weekend. We anticipate a higher traffic flow as more people travel over the weekend instead of the Fourth of July holiday landing in the middle of the week.”
Trooper McCreedy says in 2020, five people died on Iowa’s roadways over the July 4th Holiday. Four were alcohol-related. In 2021, over the July 4 holiday, motor vehicle crashes claimed seven lives, with one related to alcohol. “The Fourth of July and Labor Day are tied for the deadliest holidays. “So with increased travel and alcohol usage, motorists risk severe injury and fatal crashes.”
Trooper McCreedy points out several keys to safe travel on a holiday weekend. McCreedy says the first is; to make a plan. “This is number one thing; make a plan if you’re going to a place where there is alcohol,” said McCreedy. “In that case, establish a designated driver, take a cab, get a hotel or stay with friends. Make that plan ahead of time so you know your options.
McCreedy says the second is to stick to the plan. “Sometimes people get there and think, they didn’t have much to drink, or its’ too much of an inconvenience, and that’s when problems arise.”
Trooper McCreedy says the third key is to obey all traffic laws, travel the posted speed limit, buckle up, put the phone down, and everyone will have a safe Fourth of July weekend.
According to WalletHub, Americans spend $1.4 billion this July 4 weekend on beer and wine.
