(Atlantic) Atlantic School Superintendent Steve Barber is meeting with Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren and Atlantic Police Chief Devin Hogue to discuss the operational sharing of a School Resource Officer.
“Given the tragedy at Uvalde, Texas, and other incidents where violence has taken place, I think it will be important to review our procedures and look at appropriate actions to focus on school safety,” said Barber.
One of the legislative changes included the addition of a school resource officer to the eligible position for operational sharing. The sharing agreement would provide revenue for two additional students.
Mr. Barber is meeting with Sheriff McLaren and Chief Hogue on Monday to explore the possibility of adding a school resource officer to serve as a positive role model for the district along with a law enforcement presence.
“I feel adding this position to our team of other at-risk positions is just another resource we would have available to help serve our students,” said Barber. “To make this happen, it will need to partner with one of our local law enforcement agencies.”
During the business session, the School Board approved a three-percent salary increase for Superintendent Steve Barber. The increase brings Mr. Barber’s salary to $175,744.00.
The School Board also approved the following business items:
*The out-of-state trip to Washington D.C. for the Atlantic Middle School Students.
*The meeting/work session calendars as a guide for the next school year.
*The memorandum of understanding for the IJAG program.
*The membership renewals for IASB, ISFIS, and RSAI for the total cost of $8,012.00.
*The bid letting and public hearing-achievement center roof improvements.
The board tabled the progress invoice for the Middle School renovation project.
The school board will meet for a special board meeting on June 22 at the Schuler Elementary Media Center. The School Board meetings will resume at the High School Media Center starting next month.
