(Atlantic) Three candidates are running in the Republican June 7 Primary election for Cass County Attorney. Incumbent Vanessa Strazdas, challengers Jay Mez and Robert Engler.
During Monday’s candidate’s forum on KS95.7 and video streamed on westerniowatoday.com, Rob Engler said he is running as the local candidate in this election. He pays taxes in the county, works full-time here, go to church, and patronizes local businesses. Engler also pointed to community involvement in the public and the school system as something he would be more involved in if elected to the position of County Attorney.
Incumbent County Attorney Vanessa Strazdas said the county must know that the person elected to this position can effectively do the job. Strazdas was appointed to the position of Cass County Attorney amongst four candidates in February of 2019 and won the election in 2020.
Jay Mez emphasized the need to educate the youth about substance abuse. Mez says hes’ lived in Southwest Iowa his entire life, understands farm communities, and can help with substance abuse issues.
Early voting for the Iowa primary began on May 17. Iowa voters must remember to bring an accepted form of identification – like a driver’s license, a non-operator state ID, or a voter PIN card. Local election offices will remain open for early in-person voting through June 6. When you’re ready to return your absentee ballot, it can be taken to the county election office in person, put in a ballot dropbox if your county has one, or returned through the mail to the county auditor. No matter what method you use, your ballot has to be received by the county auditor by 8:00 p-m on June 7 to be counted.
