(Audubon) The girls Early Bird track meet at Audubon has been postponed from Thursday to Friday.
Wheeler coach Tony Konkler will lean on Hannah Thygesen and Abby Zaiger as two seniors that have been out for four years. “Hannah Thygesen, she is definitely going to be a leader for us this year. I’m expecting her to have her best year this year. She’s really put in the time in the offseason and I think she’s really ready to go. Abby Zaiger too has put in some time in the offseason working on her speed so I’m expecting big things out of her also.”
Coach Konkler adds senior Makayla Schmidt will help out in the hurdle races, sprints, and long jump. Several others are back after running at state last year. Madison Burr, Madi Steckler, and Mattie Nielsen all return with experience in Des Moines. “We are going to look a lot like we did last year. Mattie Nielsen tore her ACL and I was afraid we weren’t going to have her this year, but her doctor said she could come out and not do hurdles. Michelle Brooks will fill in the shuttle nicely. We’ll run a lot of the same events, but you’ll see some different people.”
Konkler says Addie Hocker and Alexis Obermeier both have a lot of promise in the throwing events and Stefi Beisswenger will help out in a big way in the distance races. The team competed at Buena Vista for their lone indoor meet. “I was really thrilled how we ran up there at BV. We competed against 3A and 4A schools and were in the top eight in a lot of events.”
16 teams were originally scheduled to compete at Audubon on Thursday. Konkler says additional teams could be added as a result of the postponement from Thursday to Friday.
