(Avoca) The AHSTW boys track team is scheduled to get their season started March 29th at Audubon.
The Vikings don’t have any seniors among their 16-member roster. Coach Jackson Renberg says, “We are young in a lot of ways, but they are working hard. Right now we are looking like we have some potential in hurdles, we have distance guys that can help us out, and then we are just kind of getting in shape right now, but I think they have some potential in some sprint relays.”
Renberg will be looking for big things from some of his key returners. “Aidan Martin would be one that was a part of our good relays. He’s a really hard worker, always in the weight room, good attitude, always ready to work, and he came back out. Another returner would be Ryan Wedemeyer.” Renberg adds, “He’s looking a little bit quicker this year which is a good thing. I think he can help us in several areas.” Bryce Mourick and Caleb Hatch return to lead the distance group. Coach Renberg lists Nick Denning and Gavin Newcomb as some others that can contribute along with a group of six freshmen.
They’ll find out a lot about their team in the first couple of weeks. “We are going to see those first three meets where we stand. Audubon is a good meet because you can tinker with stuff since points aren’t a big deal.” Renberg says, “I want to use meets more not just for points, but for building speed and building stamina as well like it’s a hard practice.” In addition to the Audubon meet next Tuesday (3/29), the Vikings go to Griswold next Thursday (3/31), and will compete at Treynor on Monday, April 4th.
